What look are you going for? If you like the natural wood look then remove the doors, do all the proper prep work and restrain them a wood tone you like.

You can stain them to retain the grain. My mother was a music teacher and stained a cabinet (that my father made out of pine) very differently than normal. She picked out a shellac that was 'Oak' in color. Then she added just a few drops of 'Forest Green" to the shellac. Stir well!

When she covered the cabinet, the shellac picked up on the nice grain patterns, and the green paint gave just a hint of green to the wood. It was beautiful!

If you do try this, you can use whatever color paint you want, and you can provide an extra layer of protection by coating the whole thing with polyurethane. It not only protects but also, gives a deep clean shine.

Thank you. I like your ideas. Right now I have a very light golden color, want to make them a little tealish gray.

Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of your home improvement store and ask for their suggestions on materials and techniques.

  • You can sand off the old finish and stain them a new color.
