Tips for how to apply a touch of gray to my painted fireplace?

The mantel will be gray also. How can I figure what bricks to paint.
If you are wanting to paint the interior where the fire bricks are, you need to use a specialized high heat paint. Black is the most common color.
If you are wanting to paint random bricks, you may just need to start by painting a few of them and standing back to see how you like it and then choosing a few at a time to paint. Maybe use a couple of different shades of gray. A different idea would be to paint the horizontal bricks gray. That is where the ashes will fall and it will disguise them a bit! If you have leftover white paint, just go for it, and you can always paint over if you don't like it. I'm considering painting my fireplace, this looks really good. How did you find the courage to start?
Just Paint all the Half Bricks or Dip a marine sponge into your paint and give it an all over mottled look.
You might try watering down a bit of gray paint and do a wipe witha rag. I did a "touch" of gray to some white doors and love them. I had a white base which you have on your fireplace so you are half way there already. Using a rag try a few bricks at a time until you get the look you want. You can always cover up the oops with white paint if you don't like the results.
Hi....just a thought. Paint the entire surface in light gray. Let it completely dry. Then, with a sponge, paint over it with a deep grey. Let the dark color seep into all the cracks so it looks like darker grout. Wipe the bricks, themselves, down so only bits of dark are left scattered. Adding the darker color adds depth...just like in paintings.
I would do the black heat resistant paint in the firebo. Do a dark grey on the mantle and then scatter paint the bricks sort of staGeri gold and start in the middle first with a lighter shade of grey w a touch of the dark gray here and there. It’s like adding jewelry to an outfit. Don’t over do the bricks in the base.
