How can I be sure that after all that hard work that they won't peel or chip?

Use high gloss paint. Wash the wood with Murphy's oil soap before painting. Paint the doors and draws laying flat. Spray paint the hardware, or buy all new, it gets pricey

It's all about the surface preparation. 1) clean 2) not glossy. The more work you put into surface preparation, the better your chance of long-term success. Make sure that you remove all of the hardware and don't try to paint or clean around it. Use a product called "deglosser" as your final prep before painting. You will do great.

Use ESP - Easy Surface Preparation first then undercoat and then top coat Gloss or Eggshell (satin) finish.

I would say do not skip any preparation on this. Wash with TSP, lightly sand, prime with a good quality primer then paint with a quality semi-gloss paint.

I painted My oak wood cabinets. First take all hardware off and if reusing put each set In paper cup and label cup and door it belongs to also number doors so they go back in same spot. I found that lightly sanding was easier for me than using a deglosser that would be next step then I vacuumed and used tac cloth to make sure all was clean. If you use a deglosser and need to clean cupboard TSP is good, I did both. I then used Kilz oil based primer once dry then used Behr Alkyd satin enamel but they also have a Alkyd semi gloss enamel you can choose. I put two coats of paint on. They are great! I wipe them down every night when I do dinner dishes(i have seven people three dogs and two cats) you can’t see wipe marks no chipping ! I love it I wish I would have done sooner! Just remember to take your time and have patience also don’t paint if humidity or dew point is too high or they will not harden. Good luck! I bought new cupboard knobs and spray painted the hinges to save money.
