When you say cupboard paint im wondering if you mean chalk paint..since they are in a kitchen i would definitely use a sealer for protection and easy clean up..not a varnish but a water based polyurethane..if you dont want shine just use either a matte finish or satin which gives a slight bit of shine..Min Wax makes a great water based poly in several finishes that dries quickly but if your doors are already hung get a really good finish brush and apply thinly so you dont get runs..hope this helps..
