My cabinets were about your color when I painted them white. I also have a similar floor. It's all about personal preference though. I've seen some lovely kitchens in an array of cabinet colors.

White would look nice if you replace your white appliances with stainless steel. If you keep them, I would go with a green color.

yes, or a muted color ( grey/blue). a bit too much wood-on-wood with the floor wood also, it will look amazing!
  • Kim Taylor Kim Taylor on Apr 25, 2014
You could paint them but the cabinets look timeless. Another option is just change out the hardware and maybe a big foam (ergonomic) rug or a runner in front of the sink and maybe stove. Mine is great for standing and just goes in the washer.

Do you like white kitchens? This is your kitchen so you are the one who will be living with it. I personally love black and white kitchens and all white kitchens. Seeing your pic, I think white cabinets would look amazing.

You have the perfect layout to put in an island in a different color. You could even get unfinished cabinets and then seal and paint it yourself...put on a beautiful top. Keep in mind that constant use such as that a kitchen gets will chip away at paint. This is going to be a pretty big, timely job so make sure you research this really well. Painted cabinets may not wear as well as will a factory baked on finish. A moca color would be pretty with a little darker on the bottom cabinets! Or you can keep what you have and add color in a different way!

@Viola Miller Thanks for the info...this is what I was talking about when I said "research this really well" because they need to find out about what sealer, etc. to put on top of the paint as well as how to prepare the cabinets for painting (cleaning, do they need to sand, sealer, etc.) A good prep and finish will make all the difference in durability! Glad yours are holding up...your daughter knew what she was doing!

I painted mine and love them.I laid a 13x13 black tile (it's not vinyl, but sort of a commercial soft tile) on the floor and put black hardware on the cabinets. I can accent with about any color. Jeanette is right, though, chips will happen, which is why God made correction liquid for emergencies!

I'd change out the knobs BEFORE painting them, then if you still want to cause the new hardware doesn't make them look more contemporary, then go ahead and paint away! white is tricky....snoop around here on this site and on the others like houzz.com

I think you could and it would be very bright and cheerful. I found this after googling and I think it resembles your kitchen. I also like Jeanette's idea of an island in a different color. http://thehillsarelivin.blogspot.com/2013/01/living-room-kitchen-before-after.html

Michele - that is exactly what mine would look like. We have the same appliances except my stove also has a white cooktop. Love her kitchen - Thanx

I say yes as long as you like white kitchens. It would brighten up the space a lot. You have white appliances so it wouldn't make those stand out as much also. Change out the hardware, add a nice rug and a few new kitchen towels and you will completely change it without a complete remodel. A little wall color change would be good too if that is possible and then you would have a completely new kitchen. I love it.

Yes Yes Yes!!!! you will love the black and white! It goes with any decor. I did mine 10 years ago and I have black granite counter top and it looks amazing. I have decorated "Italian" and after 9 years of that decor, changed to French Country. You won't regret it!!! (I would post a picture of mine, but there isn't a "upload" photo button.)
  • Dee Cortez Dee Cortez on Apr 29, 2014
I hope you decide to paint them white. My kitchen is small but it feels so much larger with the lighter colors.

Yes. White is so clean and crisp looking. You got enough wood going on. Post pictures!

It would be too much white for me. I would find ways to add bright colors.

I think a two tone would be nice..say a white on the bottom and a light gray or sage green on top. I love the white kitchens..but they are close to being over done. White does not stay white and can seem dingy after a while. Look at some other kitchens, you may see a color that appeals to you. But then that is how I see white on white...I like nature colors. https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=kitchens&term_meta%5B%5D=kitchens%7Ctyped

NO-too much white.like the idea of two toned.
  • Pattijo Pattijo on Dec 29, 2014
We had all wood cabinets also.. I wanted white to brighten it up, so I took doors off and numbered them..then painted the cabinet framing white, hung the wood doors back up..I was kinda afraid to paint the doors white. But after 10 yrs. of them white and wood I am going to paint it all white this spring..

painting the cabinets white will definitely brighten up the room, you could also try replacing the cabinet door hardware, maybe with a stainless steel pull.

Hi @Robin Edwards-Fowler - personally I wouldn't advise white - the only reason I'm saying that is because you have all white electricals i.e. cooker, m/wave and fridge/freezer and I think you need to set these apart - otherwise your kitchen will look too 'clinical'. Therefore, my suggestion would be perhaps like a 'silver grey' which would look nice against your white stuff. Or, you could do a 'two-tone' with certain units white and the others silver grey. ie. don't use white against white - use the grey. Having another look at your kitchen - perhaps you could use the white on the cabinets on the right hand wall. Not those facing you as you look at the picture. I also like your handles on the cabinets and they would also look nice if you painted the cabinets grey. Have a look at the link below to see how well the grey goes against the white of your electricals etc. https://www.google.ie/search?q=grey+and+white+kitchens&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=loOhVNPKK8Wa7AabkIGADQ&ved=0CB8QsAQ Have a look at this colour - perhaps something similar or the same as this? http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/silverlining Good luck with whatever you choose and show us when you have completed the project :)

@Connie Demerchant - Glad you like the grey idea Connie - specifically my reasons of why the units should not be white and I think the grey would look very 'classy' and different than just plain white and when you have so many electricals in white it just wouldn't look the same :)

Did you decide to go white?? Would love to see pics i have the same Cabinets and thinking of going white
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Dec 30, 2014
Not everything has to be white... join pinterest and save the looks you like. here is my pinterest page that I have saved for ideas for my kitchen. My walls will be a nice green..a few antiqued oak cabinets with mostly cypress open shelves. https://www.pinterest.com/terragazelle/farm-kitchen-decor/
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Dec 30, 2014
How about a nice light sage green for the cabinets with white walls? With the floor color that would look really nice and fresh and have character. Everyone wants to do white on white and it can be beautiful at first, but will that look last?

After looking at your cabinets again, I would go with off-white tops and for the bottoms, something that you like that goes with the counter tops. BTW, there are whites and whites. Grab a large sample or tape together 4-6 small samples of several whites you like. Satin finish has the durable look of soft satin with a tiny bit of gloss that washes like a dream for clean up.
  • Suzanne Escobedo Suzanne Escobedo on Dec 30, 2014
I would change the door knobs to stainless and also as you replace the appliances, go stainless.

Just a thought...I have all medium oak cabinets in my kitchen. Thought I wanted them white.Every said 'no'. Saw a lot that were painted.they all looked a little 'messy'. Finally decided to get new doors on the top, glass with panes. Absolutely love them!!! So much more light in kitchen now.the light from the window bounces off them.I no longer feel like I'm in a 'paneled room(we have wood floors, too) Now,I am so,so glad that I didn't paint!!!And everyone loves my kitchen, now! Looks so much bigger.
  • Patty Jo McFarland Patty Jo McFarland on Dec 30, 2014
Oh, and we also changed all the knobs to bronze.
  • Denise Hardy Denise Hardy on Jan 01, 2015
Actually, you don't have to have glass doors to create more light in a kitchen - if you use a gloss paint rather than a matt paint - the light will reflect off them. Another idea I like is and that is to use glass as splashbacks etc which also reflects light. I have just re-vamped an apartment in Ireland and this is what I used. Have a look at the before and pictures.

If you paint them go to Kelly Moore and get duropoxy paint! It wont come off. I have seen people use lowes or some other brand and after a year around knobs is coming off. I have had duropoxy on a rental home for 10 years and its still good!!!!

Don't paint it white. I live in a rental with white cabinets and hate it. After two years I repainted it white. Hard to keep clean.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Oct 14, 2016
How about a pretty color..like a soft sage green..would look pretty with your walls and floor, and would lighten up the place. People are using colors now for cabinets..they do not have to be either white or wood. Just make sure that you clean your cabinets really well with a deglosser, use a good primer and a couple coats of paint and at least three coats of poly. Your paint will last for ever .

Yes. It's a quick way to update your kitchen without replacing appliances. We did this for my Mom when we sold her house (it was sold during the first open house).

My kitchen cabinets are pressed wood and 27 years old. They are covered with a paper that looks like wood. Can I peel the paper off and seal the pressed wood, then paint them? Can't afford to replace them.

It's totally a personal preference, if you like white, go for it!! I prefer white and I finally just painted mine... I can't believe that I didn't do it sooner, I absolutely love them! They make my kitchen feel so fresh and clean. I actually like to cook more now. :)
