This is the perfect size for my space. Current night stand is WAY to big. I'm going to change the drawer pull but other than that, all I want is to prime and paint.
Need confirmation on my idea for painting headboard and nightstand.

I got a great deal on Craigslist on a queen headboard (all wood) and a nightstand. Both fit my needs perfectly as to size and design. My plan was to remove the paint and stain them a dark red. However, the night stand isn't solid wood so that idea is out the window. So, I want to paint both items. They're both VERY shiny so I'll have to prime first, of course. To save time, I'd like to spray the primer on. A guy at Lowe's paint dept told me recently that spray paint will stick to anything. Not sure he's right, but maybe so. But if I buy spray primer, seems it will stick, even to this super glossy surface, right? And then, because I don't want the items to be super shiny when they're finished, I thought about using satin paint and finishing with a satin poly to protect from chipping. I don't like the look or cost of chalk paint. What do some of you painter pros think is the best spray primer to use?
The top looks similar to plastic but that's OK for how this will be used. But whatever it is, I need paint to stick to it.
Rustoleum automotive primer.I would also say to get some 0000 steel wool(Walmart)and sand it first.The steel wool sands gently.Then wipe down with a micro-fiber cloth.It's also a good (necessary) idea to sand softly between all coats.It's a weekend.
Whether you hand paint or spray paint you should lightly sand to remove the gloss. Then you can prime and paint. With spray paint several light coats will give you a smooth finish. Use a water based polyurethane to seal.
Consider spray primer for cars. It's only slightly more costly and you can get it in colors now.
Automotive primer just works well under spray paint.It also dries quickly.If you want to use tack cloth go for it,I use micro-fiber.
I always use Krylon. That stuff sticks to anything!!
