How can I paint or dye a large rug in my living room?

How big is it? Paint would probably be easier if its really large

When first married we had a silver grey area rug to go on wood floor in living room of small apartment.

When we bought first house, we wanted green color as light gray was getting dirty easily.

I studied best way to do coloring, got a box of green fabric dye. It went on and into the rug well.

When still wet shoe bottoms got green too. Had to walk around it until completely dry.

It was ok to use with couch
