Use a watered down masonry paint. Unless you seal the pricks first, the paint will suck into the dry bricks, so you may use more than one coat!

Clean thoroughly first. My cousin did a whitewash on hers with thinned latex paint and it looked great. She used youtube to learn how but basically it was just clean, thin, and brush on.

My previously white-washed FP looked pink, so I would suggest tinting the paint a tiny bit green, to counter that- if you want white wash.
If you're going to use your FP, all White is a ton of maintenance with ash clean out and smoke residue above the firebox.
I suggest using a masonry dye/stain. It can't peel, and it can be scrubbed.
Yes, can be done. Make sure bricks are clean and visit your paint store and they will get you the type of paint you need.
