sounds like you need to fill them in with dry wall mud and sand it flat before you paint

get some joint compound and a putty knife and fill in the cracks. Sand it smooth before painting

I would putty or Spackle the cracks, then sand before painting.

You've received some good advice so far! One thing to note is that your cracks may reappear if your house settles again. If you have the means to do it, you may want to have a structural engineer look around your house to make sure your foundation is solid and that you've got enough support for every floor throughout the house.

If your home was recently built, cracks in walls could be the results of “new home” settling.

Hairline cracks over doors and windows are likely due to settling.Leaving a house vacant can cause wall cracks.

A thin straight crack could be the result of faulty taping.Discoloration around the edges of the crack indicates a leak.

Large, jagged, or diagonal cracks could indicate a structural problem.

The best way to repair a crack in drywall is to re-tape the joint.

Spackle does not provide the same reinforced surface coverage you’ll get by re-taping, and any slight settling will cause the crack to show up again.

For long-lasting repairs, re-tape cracks rather than filling them with spackle.

Get a bucket of compound and plaster mix some compound in a bucket and add some compound together about 1/2 and 1/2 mix well ad a little water if needed put on cracks with a putty knife keep applying to cracks flat let dry when dark spot is gone it’s dry then when nice and flat sand lightly and paint

In addition to these solutions, some people like “painter’s caulk” because it won’t re-crack.

Buy the water-based version.

It can’t be sanded, so “sand” it with a wet sponge, the minute you apply it.

You can fill the cracks with caulk/plaster before painting

Lightly apply Spackle using a putty knife. Try to just put enough on so the area looks smooth. Wait several hours till it is dry then lightly sand it down.

Deep cracks might need two applications.
