When choosing a color for cabinets, should I pull a color out of the counter top or the floors.

Hi Rosie I think we would all love to see a picture so we can help better! I would say it really depends on the room you're working in. I have also personally used the countertop to help pick the cabinet color choice.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to upload a photo but the image format was wrong so I couldn't. There's a lot of colors in my countertop to choose from...dark grey, light grey a soft brown. My floors have similar colors but light. I love my flooring...it's brand new. I think a creamy taupe would be pretty, white would maybe be to contrasting with the counters....ugh! I think my best bet would be to paint some large swatches on some posterboard & tape them up. Thanks again

Great question. Agree with grandma’shouseDIY. Knowing your overall existing color composition might be helpful before offering suggestions. Personally I used white cabinets which went well with my granite and floors being a neutral.

You didn't mention a backsplash. I consider the backsplash first and the counter top second, and the floor third. The backsplash and cabinets are are on the same visual plane and they should have a connection.

  • Hi Rosie,

I agree with Tarah--a photo would help so much. One piece of advice I can offer is to make sure the colors make sense together. For example, if you have warm tones already, I would stick with a warm tone palette. You'll find that any color can be made cool or warm, so that doesn't limit your choices, but will help things flow together better.

    Hope that helps! icon

Personal choice. Lot of people go with white to brighten the kitchen. Some go with a contrasting color. Others like lower cabinets one color and a shade of white in the uppers. I have not seen anyone that would pull a color from a countertop or floor. Maybe a medium color from a backsplash. Here are some ideas from other Hometalkers

I am sort of in the same position. Going to paint our kitchen cabinets this summer and have changed my mind several times regarding color so I took the easy way out and am going to paint them a white with a gray hint to it.

I want light cabinets but not so white they look like a hospital room. I want to bring out the gray of my appliances but not be overwhelming.

Plus if I decide to change my wall color the cabinets will work with almost any color.

Hi Rosie, myself, I love the color of my floors, so I would pull the color from the flooring, this will allow for a bit of contrast between the counters and cabinets. When color coordinating a kitchen, the countertops should complement the flooring and cabinets, but not directly match. When choosing a color scheme, there should be two colors, and a third for accents.

It really depends on the colors. Dark colors will close up the area. White can be too stark. I would paint them a neutral color, such as beige white or gray white. They will then go with everything.

Light gray will go well with practically every scheme you have going on in your kitchen. Since you are going to paint, the higher the gloss finish you use, the more durable the paint will be in standing up to cleaning.

I would go with a color that matches the counter tops. Flooring is replaced more often than counter tops.

I’d pull out a few colours from the countertop. Then pick the one that you like best and also looks good with the floor.

    Hi,

As I can't see your Kitchen, it is difficult for me to advise. Just go with the one you can live with.
