Wash the cabinets. Prime with KILZ, BIN, or Zinsser primer. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. Use a foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Can I use chalk paint on particle board?
I live in a manufactured home and I did mine like this. Wash well, sand lightly, prime, paint 2 coats. I used Glidden semi gloss from Walmart. Here are pictures of before and after. I can wash them with warm soapy water to remove spills. I also painted my ugly faux butcher block laminate counter tops to look like granite. I now love my kitchen!
