If you want a professional looking result, then yes. If you want it to look like a preschooler scribbled on your trim, just slap it on and hope for the best. Preparation and following certain steps for any project are key to success. Not trying to be mean, just realistic.

It needs to be at least sanded before applying paint so that the paint sticks. Otherwise the oils from the stain will cause the paint not to adhere well.

Like Naomie suggests. For a professional and lasting paint job there are steps that need to be taken. Lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz or BIN. Then paint with door and trim paint.

If you don't do the prep work, your door won't look nice and you'll end up living with it not looking the way you want it to. Better to leave it as is, then to not do it the correct way. As others have said, sand, prime it so the current stain/color is blocked, then paint it the color of your choice...white. It will be worth the work and will be done correctly. Happy diy-ing!

I repainted all the wood trim and doors in my home about 7 years ago. I had to prime first, then paint. It was a lot of work but worth it, for it brighten up the house.

Hi, for a professional finished look, sadly, it does take multiple steps. If you break the work up into the steps over a few days it is readily achievable.

In stead I moved to my teens room and made a diy queen size head board extra slot.. as the original head board was to tall for the platform bed mattress. Pillow and head sliding underneath. Easy fun stapling gun diy!
