We have a hardwood living room floor that we would like to refinish. I've researched and and ask questions of the location to rent the sander. I am terrified to start and just wonder if there are any tips for me? We want to go dark to cover the old water stains.

We hired a professional to sand the floor down, stain and seal it. Refinishing a wood floor is time-consuming. To do this yourself, you need to be careful with the sander so that you don't gouge the floor. Plan for a great deal of sawdust from the sanding. Seal off everything you can to keep it free from sawdust. Once sanded, you may find that the water stains do not really show. After sanding sweep, vacuum and wash the floor with TSP. After staining you will need to stay off the floor. We did our large floor in several sections as it was a walkthrough room. You may need to apply several coats of stain. Wait for each coat to dry well. After you apply your sealer you will need to stay off the floor again and make sure to let each seal coat dry thoroughly. Sand lightly and clean between each coat. Our professional suggested 3 to 5 coats of sealer. Then, for floor care, never use a steam cleaner; use a microfiber dust mop and a specialty wood floor cleaner like Bono.
If I am seeing your floor as it is, it looks like some of the blocks the flooring goes one way and the other blocks the flooring goes sideways to the first. If that is so, this is too complex a floor for amateurs. At lease get a bid from a professional. . . and maybe some advice.
Parquet floors need to be sanded with very fine grit paper for the finishing pass.
Parquet floors are small bits of wood glued together. You cannot sand very deeply like a plank floor.

B.Enne is correct. The video is perfect. You need to use an orbital sander. It will remove the old finish and a little of the wood. Make sure you get progressive grits of sanding pads and a polishing pad. When I did my maple floor after removing carpeting all it needed was some refinishing. Started with 80 grit sandpaper, 100 grit, 150 grit, 200 grit, then the polishing pad. It's like a giant Scotch Brite pad. Three coats of a water based polyurethane. Did not stain it. 12' X 25' living room took one weekend.
