Depending on the look you are going for....go to one of the DIY stores and look at stick on tiles...a friend used the silver tile that were about 1" by 1/2" in blocks and after using in the kitchen in her summer rental decided to put it on the back risers of steps because being a rental they scuffed so badly they would repaint each year! So on they went and even with a few dents they looked quite nice! You could modge podge a material also or just paint each one a different color! Have dolne that in different places we have lived

We have built-ins on either side of our gray brick fireplace, and I would love to paint the fireplace out in white. However, my husband feels it would be a bad idea.
You could use the glue down vinyl planks. You can also purchase a nosing to match the color you select for the treads.

You could stain and urethane them. Or put carpet on them, makes them quieter and softer.

Hi, vinyl tiles come in all kinds of designs and colors and they're really easy to install too. They look beautiful on stair risers.
