We used Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations and it turned out great. They have tons of colors to choose from and as long as you follow the steps it turns out really well.

I have seen some great results with Chalk paint. I think a good quality paint as Annie Sloan's might work best. Then of course a good wax to seal them.
Make sure you wash down the cupboards with degreaser...then use an oil paint that will be more durable
there's a load of different paints available today. start with preparing the surface. clean it, strip or sand it if needed. the extra prep time is so worth the time. both home stores have small bottles of paint samples you can test,
would suggest a semi'gloss or eggshell because it's easier to wipe finger prints off, i like latex and acrylics for a durable washable surface
I've used Behr Ultra and they still look good. You'll need to sand and degrease. Take all your doors and hardware off and label them so you know what goes where. You might also want to coat them with a matte poly. And if you're feeling really ambitious, change out all the hardware. That can make a real difference.
