I would prime the cabinets with this (or a similar product) first.

Hi Julie - I just posted the first answer. The KILZ product does the same thing as the STIX product and may be a better product. There are other brands as well - you just have to research the reviews a bit - good luck!

Wash your cabinets well, remove all doors, hardware, and drawers. Sand lightly with a fine grit sandpaper if they are really glossy--to dull the finish. Wipe them down again if you sanded. Prime with a good primer. I think it's helpful to get your primer tinted to your paint color because if you would happen to scuff off some paint you will not see the white primer underneath. Paint with a good quality latex acrylic paint in an enamel finish. This is the best paint to use because it is made to paint cabinets and trim. It wears well and is easy to wash. You will probably need at least 2 coats of paint-maybe three. If you have access to a paint sprayer for the doors and drawers it will give you a nice smooth finish--you can rent a paint sprayer. If you do not want to paint the inside of the drawers you will have to tape them off with newspaper and masking tape. A good brush will be helpful when painting the actual cabinets. Let everything dry well--I would let the drawers and doors dry for two days before putting them back. Know that it takes paint about 3-4 weeks to completely cure--that means reaching it's maximum hardness--so be careful using the cabinets in the first month. Dry paint and cured paint are two different things. You do not need to poly over the paint. it is strong enough on it's own.

  • You can use any semigloss latex paint. The cabinets have to be cleaned really well first. The pros use tsp (trisodiumphosphate) you can find it any place that sells paint. Also use a good primer, not something you wanna skimp on. Also, I know you're gonna have people ranting about chalk paint and how great it is, just not for the kitchen. You can't scrub it and it does get grease stains
