What’s the best method for painting over semi gloss paint?

Most of the walls in my house are painted with semi gloss paint. Is there any procedure for repainting the walls in a satin finish that will produce the best results?

If you're not sure if the semi-gloss is oil or latex, consider priming the walls first, otherwise a simple washing (maybe with TSP) and rinse should allow you to paint over them. Do any patching and sanding you need to do too.

Many current paints have primer built in and after a couple coats, your semi-gloss will be all covered.

Since smooth, glossy surfaces don't hold paint well, you'll need to dull the glossfinish before repainting. No matter which type of paint you plan to use over the semi-gloss, you should sand and prime the surface. ... 1) Sand the painted surface evenly with a sandpaper until it becomes dull and smooth.

  • I would prime it first, then paint it.
