If you use a chalk paint (little to no prep work involved) you will need to seal with a polycrylic product (or wax). The polycrylic can be purchased in a matte finish. You could also choose to use fusion paint, no sealant required and dries to a matte finish. If you intend to sand, Rome and paint, choose a paint in a satin finish....the paint store should be able to advise the best paint and finish for the job

Tinsley, the key is surface preparation. Remove all hardware. Clean, sand, clean, sand, clean. Prime if recommended by the paint manufacturer. I'm a fan of Rust-Oleum's Painter's touch, but your paint store would make the best recommendation since they know what they sell. You don't want to use latex wall paint.

You can put a satin or matte poly over the paint when you are done to provide more durability but it is not required.
