We'd like to introduce Laura Hodges, the owner of a boutique design studio in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area specializing in interior design and styling, color consultation and home staging. Usually Laura is busy designing for her Clients but today we're sharing her own kitchen makeover and it is jaw dropping gorgeous! Here is what her kitchen looked like before:
The original kitchen was 7'x11' so it was very small. Laura updated the cabinetry and appliances, installed a new butcher block island with open shelving and relocated the doorway to add French doors. Then she removed part of a wall to open up the space into the dining area. The kitchen makeover was coming along quite nicely but Laura wanted to introduce a subtle pattern. Laura commented, "I always love a good DIY project and stencils are definitely a great way to add interest and character to your walls. Much less expensive than wallpaper, stencils allow you to be creative with your space while keeping a space feeling light and open."
With her stencil in hand, she was ready to start stenciling! Laura used blue painter's tape to hold the Harlequin Trellis pattern in place. The walls were already painted a cool gray hue. Laura painted the pattern in white using a dense foam roller. If you are recreating this project at home, be sure to roll off any excess paint to eliminate bleed. After each section of the stencil is complete, simply untape it and reposition to finish the pattern on the wall. For more information on how to stencil, please check out our stencil tutorials.
Laura used the classic wall pattern to add style to her breakfast nook. She carried the pattern through the kitchen on the blank wall on the left.

Absolutely beautiful! You did an excellent job, it's really important to match the stencils up and you cannot see any slips. Really good work. :-)
