Do not panic if you have something that is already painted and can't go back to stain because you can fake it till you make it.

After painting a decorative border under the white trim, my client decided the white trim didn't go well with the dark brown wooden stair railing.

So I told her I could paint it to make it look like stain.

First, I brushed on a golden color paint sporadically as a base color you can see it's very gold.

Next, I painted a reddish brown acrylic paint letting some of the gold show through. You don't want to completely cover up the gold.

I used a smaller type brush for this.

the last step after it dries is to brush on some black paint mixed with glaze which will make it a little transparent so as not to completely cover the brown or gold but just adds darkness and depth. And that is it.

Now the trim matches the stair railings and well, now she wants me to paint all the window sills and the trim of the stairs going up icon

If your trim is painted brown could you achieve the same effect with just using the gold and black paints? What were the exact colors used

Great job! Did you sand the trim and window sills before painting? What colors did you use?

It looks good, but why not just use wood stain or am I missing something?
