Our house has plaster walls in almost every room and we've painted several times over the 45 years that we've lived here. We always have used regular latex paint. If it is new plaster or if you are dramatically changing the color, I'd suggest using a primer. Usually you can have the primer tinted the same color as your new paint which helps a lot. It could be that an oil based primer was used when the home was originally painted so if it's fresh plaster you may want to use that. Wishing you the best.
I have painted my plaster walls in my living room, many many times over 40 years. I use latex paint. The only time I have used a primer is over freshly patched areas. BUT I have never used really dark paint. The last paint I used had a built in primer. I use flat paint in the living / bedrooms. Enamel in the kitchen and baths. None has new plaster walls anymore - don't think they do that type of workmanship anymore, everything is wall board.
I have painted my plaster walls (not wall board) several times. Latex flat on living / dining and bedrooms. Latex Enamel on kitchen and bathrooms. I have only used primer on freshly patched areas, and hard to hide colors I was painting over. It probably is NOT fresh plaster as that type of workmanship is not done much anymore. It may be fresh wall board, that is different.

any paint can be used but an alkyd primer is usually recommended on Plaster
