WHY I DON’T USE CHALK PAINT ANYMORE

When I first started painting furniture about 3 years ago, I started off with chalk paint. It was a new product (to me anyway) that promised to make painting easy and I think it made trying a new project less intimidating. With chalk paint you aren’t supposed to have to sand or prime your furniture and it dries quickly and washes off with water for easy distressing (or for cleaning it off things you didn’t mean to paint). I still think that if you’re new to painting, chalk paint is a great place to start if it makes you more comfortable. But there are a few reasons I’ve graduated from chalk paint to latex paint and other professional paint products (glaze, stain, etc).

I'm with you too. I used it on several projects and in short order understood that there are easier and less expensive ways to get, basically, the same look. Behr's Matte finish (not to be confused with their Flat finish) latex with primer is a really good choice for me.

Yes, you're right, it is closer to eggshell (forgot about that one). I've never used it on furniture but I have used chalk paint enough to feel that matte is an excellent replacement. Best description - looks flat, feels smooth.

While I agree with you on the many points of pros and cons of latex vs chalk paint, it seems less than kind to call out any specific brands. Sorry. *shrugs* It did get me to look though. ; )

I see your point. The photo is just what I had on hand when I originally wrote this post. On my blog I also have many great posts about those brands that are still up and running. But I get a lot of questions about using chalk paint and I just can't, in good conscience, recommend it over more durable and affordable products on the market!
