Hi Megan, there's many, many diy's you can do in a small space. Just decide what you need. Need to store books?...think about stacking books on the floor to a table top height and use a couple of belts to strap them in place. So many ways to diy....I'd suggest you look through various projects on this site and just see what you can apply to your place that suits your style and needs. You can enter a topic word in the area on the home page to find different projects that might interest you.
If you're looking to do the diy in an apartment, I would do most of it in the kitchen. Use a large dropcloth to protect the floor and go for it!
