Fruit flys?

This is always so tough, I never find an option that works. Sometimes some wine with some fruit in a plastic cup covered in plastic wrap with a few holes catches a few flies. What has helped me is cleaning my drains and keeping them covered with silicone tub covers.

Did you add a few drops of dish soap? They get trapped in the soap.

I use these fruit fly traps and they work great.

You need to find out how they are getting in.

Fruit flies are drawn toward rotting fruit or fementing liquids. They are repelled by strong yet pleasant fragrances. Lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, clove and basil herbs and essential oils can be effective in detering and preventing fruit flies:

Place herbal tea bags around your kitchen.

Add a few drops of essential oils to cotton balls and put them where you’ve seen fruit flies.

Hang sachets of dried herbs.

Cut off fruit flies from their food source. Locate and clean potential fruit fly breeding areas. Check drains, underneath appliances, inside the dishwasher or any spot where there is moisture and food debris.

Take out the garbage regularly. Empty and scrub trash cans inside and out to remove any old food particles.

If you are collecting compost material in your kitchen, be sure the receptacle has a tight-fitting lid and is emptied regularly. You may also want to use compostable bin liners to make this easier.

Change sponges, dishcloths or kitchen towels weekly.

Basically just be very clean and wash almost every thing.

These pests come into your house in the form of eggs on your produce, what you do is wash all produce and put it in the refrigerator, with the exception of bananas, just wash and leave them out. The eggs hatch and you have fruit flies because conditions are right.

Since you have them, clean your drains with 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup white vinegar, when the fizzing stops rinse the drains with hot water. This will take care of the eggs that remain in the drains, cover them when done.

For the airborne ones, we have found that a combination of cola with more sugar added and yeast draw them into the small container covered with plastic wrap and holes. It is yucky looking. Also add a sticky trap for mice (Walmart has multi packs) with a piece of decaying fruit centered on it will draw them and they stay stuck.

Mogie is right that you first have to find what the source of the fruit flies is, which could be several possibilities. I would add to the list of all the areas to check and clean, shopping bags. Do you keep either plastic or fabric grocery shopping bags to reuse them? If so, I would recommend to get rid of all of them, or wash the real fabric ones in very hot soapy water. This is time consuming and requires electricity to heat up the water; doing this may not be time or cost effective.

Unfortunately the papery/fake fabric bags that are often sold by grocery stores do not wash well without disintegrating. If fruit flies are still a problem after doing all that Mogie suggests, I would get rid of all these bags as well, as the fibres may very well be harbouring fruit fly eggs.

Apple cider or red wine vinegar 50/50 with water and a few drops of dish detergent is the mixture. You will need to put a bit of it in the bottom of something with a long neck. The scent attracts them and the soap traps them so they can't fly back out.

Pour a small amount of bleach in all drains. Close off all drains when their not being used.

Hello—Using the cider vinegar with a dot of dishwashing detergent always works for me. Are you using cider or clear vinegar.
