Furniture arrangement??

by Emily
I moved into a house with a very large, rectangle shaped living room and have no idea how to arrange my furniture or decorate. The fireplace is in the center of the room with a staircase on the opposite side which causes confusion on room ideas! The loft overlooks thr entire living room. I attached pictures from every angle so you can see the set up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

I would love a room like that.

Thank you! It is beautiful but very awkward for decorating!

I have a similar size room, and I just separated it into multiple seating areas. It appears that you have chosen to use your TV as the focal point of the room. I would put a sofa table behind the couch whose back faces into the room, and create another seating area that focuses on the Fireplace. Maybe mix in some chairs to balance out the heavy upholstered couches. Just my two cents

Thank you for the ideas! I would love to make the fireplace the focal point and mount the TV. I like the idea of putting a sofa table behind the couch though!

i had a living room like that and I basically made two rooms out of it. Arrange living room furniture at one end then convert the other end into an office or kids playroom. Use a room divider behind the sofa if you do not want the other half visible.

Hello Emily; If I were decorating your Home, I would do several things.

I am wondering about something......Do you currently have a Dining room??

Aside from that, I need to know if you have a budget, and if you want to purchase any other pieces of furniture?

If not, do you have any other furniture to work with?

I really wish that I could come and redo your Home for you!!! LOL!

Please respond, and I will help you further.

Also, one thing that I would suggest is for you to decide on a grouping of Pictures, to use on the wooden wall which flanks your stairs.

If possible, decide on one color for the frames, unless you can get Antiques.

    Thank-You!!! Take Care!

Thanks for the reply! I would like to purchase new furniture or whatever may be needed to spruce up this room! I do have a living room that I have redone already. I was thinking about painting the fireplace too??

    Hi Emily,

I think painting the fireplace or even white-washing it (you can do I with paint - look it up on google.com. Type in white-washing with paint. With the dark wood and the dark fireplace, it is lost for a focal point. I also like Sunny's idea of pics on the angled wall. Maybe add some antique or unusual mirrors to reflect light in the room.

I would move the sofa to face the fireplace, but I'm guessing your hubby wants the TV there. You could also move the sofa back and put the other part of the sofa on the other side to make a conversation area that includes both the TV and the fireplace.

Could you use the area behind the sofa as a dining area (or do you have a dining room ). Maybe a thinner table against the back wall with a couple of chairs on side and pulled out a little from the table. Angle them to face each other.

If you're thinking about getting new furniture, see if you can find a free room planner online. That will help you move things around to see what works and what you would like. If you want to make the fireplace the focal point of the room, you've got to have at least some furniture facing the fireplace. My daughter did that by using a corner next to the fireplace but I can't figure out how you could do that without adding at least a mini-wall.

Take pics as you go and post it as a project. We'd love to see it once you finish!

    Good luck!

If you are keeping all of the furniture, the quickest and easiest solution would be to move the sofa to the right of the FP, and put the love seat in front of the FP, if there is enough room, if not put the sofa in front of the FP, and the love seat to the right of the FP. You should still be able to see the tv, if not put the tv where the love seat is now, or over the FP.

Another option would be to have the sofas flank the FP, and put the tv on the stair wall in front of the FP, but that would mean people would walk in front of it... If you go that route, you could put a gallery wall with black frames around it.

Here's another option with different furniture.

    Hello Emily; You are Welcome!!

If I were redoing these areas. I would leave the Fireplace alone.

If you add paint to it, then it will really pop out at you when you are in the room, and will be a distraction. To me, the Fireplace belongs with the wooden walls.

Antiques would look nice in this area. I would use Antiques sprinkled throughout the entire room.

Also, Wing backed chairs would look quite nice on directly in front of the Fireplace, on either side.

A very large basket would be nice on the hearth.

I would add some type of large ornamental candle holders, with candles on the mantel.

I would flank both sides of the Fireplace with either bookcases, or else Antique hutches, and I would fill them with Antiques/Collectables.

I also would purchase several Paintings for empty walls.

I would purchase, or turn the large sofa around, so that it faces the Fireplace.

You should acquire more furniture, to create seating areas. One zone for the TV area, another for the Fireplace.

Lastly; I would use the large area, where the cat condo is for relaxing, with a bar or else I would add more furniture, so that the room is incorporated as a Family/Living room.

I hope that this helps you!!!! Have fun and Take Care!
