Moving from a furnished appartement to a non furnished one. I have to but everything apart from the fridge and oven. Seems to be very expensive, any advice to save?I am thinking of buying the minimum now: bed + mattress, sofa + small table, tv + its table, then wait for end if the year sales to buy everything else. But even at 50% off these will easily cost 5000-6000. (prices from Hudson bay.)I live in montreal and i am moving

if you have a Rooms to Go store you can buy one room or more rooms of furniture and they have great sales and promotions to pay over time without interests. You could also look online in your area for yard sales and thrift shops that may have items you could use and even spruce up to your liking.

Consignment stores! Often great quality stuff for way less than 50% new. But buy a new quality mattress.

Moving is never fun but shopping is... buy NEW mattress and upholstered furniture then go to the nearest Goodwill stores or Thrift type stores for tables and chairs to hold you until you can save up for more furniture. Make sure you scrub and disinfect everything that is ā€œnew to youā€ before bringing inside your new home. Good luck and have fun with it....

Friends/relatives often have more stuff that they don't want/need. Let them know you are moving, you might be surprised what you can get. Have fun furnishing your apartment.

Consignment stores and antique shops should have older furniture of significantly better construction than most furniture made in the last 20 years.

Buy the best you can afford, even if only a few pieces at a time. You'll thank yourself, in years to come. Most imported furniture is very cheaply constructed, lacks zip off covers, removeable pillows, has cheap framing, insufficient batting/padding, or cheap material coverings.

  • Hudson Bay can be expensive! Buy slowly over time as budget and sales allow. Buy quality over quantity. A bed and mattress are extremely important, buy those first. If budget is a concern, scour thrift and second hand shops, just about anything can be made over with paint or stain. Older furniture is far better made than any mass produced items that they sell now, unless you have thousands to spend on each piece, which most people don't have. Ask family or friends for any unused pieces they may have and you can always make them over or use until you can afford to buy what you really want.
