This link has some ideas most involve paint unfortunately

So sorry, to correct your wall it will involve paint:
If the mistake has dried already, use the base coat paint color to make touch ups with a small piece of sponge or a blunt artist's brush.
To soften or tone down a sponged surface that's turned out too busy or bright, let the glaze dry completely. Then, using a sponge, cover the surface with a layer of very diluted colored glaze (twice as thin - reuse one of the finish colors), and immediately wipe it off with a clean sponge.

Could you go in with the lighter color and add more sponges to it that way
You might be able to sponge-on a lighter color to tone down the one you don't like
You can use a lighter color and go over it to blend.
You could blend another, lighter color with the same technique or add a glaze to it.
just use lighter color or mix white with the paint you have already used to lighten it up

Could you sponge paint it with the color you want more of to blend it so the other color doesn't show as much?
Most any method to improve the look of the too dark sponging is to use more paint. The least work would be to use the sponge techinique again using the lighter base color or doing a "white/light wash" over the sponged areas to decrease the darkness.
If the texture doesn't bother you, a long-napped roller cover will do the trick, particularly with latex paint. It'll give more texture to even out the sponge differences. And do a good job of hiding any other problems. If you want smooth, it's either skim coat or sand. I know you said you did not want to paint but there is no way to get around it.
Go over it with the spong in the first. Color and it will tone it down.
Trial and error is your best bet!
If you still want to keep the sponged look, you can sponge a bit more on of a light color. That should help it all blend in better.
Totally add a lighter color and fix it. With sponge paint, there is so much wiggle room to get a look you love - and sponge painting is so much faster than painting again and starting over!!!!
What I meant by not having to paint again was not to have to start over..Thanks everyone for your thoughts.I will definitely let you know which method I used and how it turned out 💪😊
