Once cat has walked away from bowl, cover nd place in fridge.
Find the source of the ants. Set out some ant traps to trap the ants. Clean around where you place the bowl with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Ants leave a trail behind and vinegar will remove it.
We have this problem too with our 2 feral girl kitties. The ants (and some crickets and slugs) love the dry catfood-Meow Mix. What I did was set up Terro a foot or so away from the cat dish, the ants go to the Terro before the catfood. At night, I empty the dish into a plastic bag and freeze the remaining catfood, any ants and are killed. If there are any remaining slugs, they get the salt treatment.
Try changing the location of the bowl or use a barrier like sticky tape.
place the cat bowl in a plate of water, creating a moat
I keep pet food in an air tight container and when pet finishes eating I pick up the bowl.
Sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the area.
Put a plate full of water down and put the bowl in it. Make sure the bowl is heavy enough to not float and not so big the cats have to stretch to get the food.
FIRST find where the ants are getting in. Buy Optiguard gel for ants. It is clear and they ants take it back to the queen in the colony to poison her. If you don't kill the queen you will NOT get rid of the ants. Watch the ants and find the tiniest hole they are coming from put a few dots of the gel there for them to eat. Make sure the cats are not getting to it put a waste basket or something in front of it if you have to so they don't step in it, When the ants are gone seal the entry way they came in from with clear silicone of what ever you have .
Track down where the ants are coming from and use Terro liquid bait traps. Make sure all food is picked up or sealed up right away to avoid attracting them.
We use terro ant bates / traps that work wonders.
Set the bowl of cat food in another bowl with water in it.
Cover the bowls when cat has finished eating.
Hello, you can sprinkle some diatomaceous earth around the bowl
