The easiest way to figure it out is decide what you want to do and then go onto YouTube and watch videos of other people doing it. There are many many videos of people showing how to do different projects and use different tools. I always find it easier if I can watch someone else do it step-by-step. If they are using tools you don't have and there is a restore in your area it is a fantastic place can't find tools and materials at affordable cost.

not sure what you want to do but I would start small , don't take on a large project until your sure of yourself, sometimes a project seems like a good idea (like re-tileing the bathroom) and is a good dyi project, but their is a lot more work than it seems. it would be easy to get discouraged and want to quit mid-project, so what ever you do be sure you enjoy the processes, look on u-tube for whatever project you are thinking of and you will find more than enough information on how to and what is involved and possible problems you could encounter( like when I redid my bathtub tile I found sheetrock that was rotted , it got wet? and some wall studs that was rotting out so I end up taking about 2 extra days to replace all that?)
so start small, do your research, have fun, enjoy it, don't make it a chore by doing too much!! ps don't be afraid to try something, if it don't turn out, you can always hire someone to fix it!! or tear it up and try again! ps don't do major electrical stuff, hire that done
