I'm stumped on my living room layout...help!
I need some expert advice! A year ago we moved into our new house and our living room was double in size. My small little carpet looks lost now, and I find that I need a lot of seating for a family of 10, but at the same time it is awkward to have one couch on one wall and the other across the room, it feels like you are shouting almost.
The room has a gorgeous view of a field and old Doug for trees, so I feel should definitely not be blocked. Also the area at the bottom of the picture is the main walkway from the stairs into the kitchen. If money were not an option, what pieces would you buy or move around to make this more cozy?

TENITA DEAL on Aug 17, 2015I would begin by moving all the furniture away from the wall. If you bring everything closer together you would have space around the furniture to walk and a cozy conversation area.Helpful Reply

PainterNoni on Aug 17, 2015Place white couch & loveseat at right angles with loveseat farthest away from large window. Place arm height table in resulting space. find another similar scale chair, and place the 2 chairs on the rug in front of the large window. paint or slipcover dark couch with pop of color. Paint coffee table with coordinating color.Helpful Reply

Karen Reilly on Aug 17, 2015If money is no object first I would paint the walls maybe a light taupe. Then get a larger rug with red in it something like an oriental but not one since money is no object I would look for it at an antique store or find it at an auction old rugs in good condition are the best. I would move the furniture closer together but since I don't like coffee tables I would again hunt for interesting tables at auctions and antique places. I would also put the loveseat across from where it is. If the thought of someone walking on your path bothers you first think about who it could be. If it is strangers then put up the shades that go from the bottom to the top. If it just family ignore it and enjoy the view. A nice gray would work the paint too. Sorry this is so long but you did ask.Helpful Reply

Tammy on Aug 17, 2015Larger couch infront of window and rug centered. If the love seat is too small for the wall, add a nice chair.Helpful Reply

Annie on Aug 17, 2015Hi, what a lovely picture window, definitely would not want to block, I would look to move one couch 90 degrees with back to walk through, then your two seater could be centred where the couch was that you moved but forward slightly so not right up to wall (hope that makes sense, you would then have a cozy seating area, your carpet would fit the space and you all can enjoy the great veiw. You can leave gaps for walking through to the walk way. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful home :) annieHelpful Reply

Fay on Aug 17, 2015I would leave cream couch where it is and put the cream love seat nest to it facing the window to form a L. I then would remove the large black couch and replace that area with two comfy chairs with a table between them. A colorful printed rug with matching throw pillows and large canvas art piece would complete look. And allow you to enjoy the beautiful window scene. If you are more into neutrals; it looks that way. I would use a printed neutral rug with a variation of colors, match up those pillows and art. Consider drapes to match. There are a lot of sites on BHG and DIY which will provide you with inspiration and fantastic prices. Check Zulily. Enjoy your beautiful home. Oops, forgot, place rug between cream couch and loveseat , and maybe add some interesting throw rugs next to chairs.Helpful Reply

Sue McGee on Aug 17, 2015You definitely don't want to cover up the view, use that as the focal point of the room! Leave the larger white sofa where it is but move the brown sofa to make an L out of both sofas. You can add an end table with a lamp in the open corner the sofas make. Then move your love seat to the wall where the brown sofa is now. Use slipcovers to make your sofas match, hang tall curtain panels on either side of all of the windows (to frame the view) and hang pictures (either a large piece of artwork or a grouping of family photos) over the white sofa. Then you can decide if you need a larger rug.Helpful Reply

Nora Satrun on Aug 17, 2015I would put two chairs by the window with the small table in between. I would take the love seat and put it opposite the chairs. I would get identical throws for both sofas which would be on opposing walls. I would center the rug keeping the direction that it is in, but now the rug would tie all three soft pieces together to give the room a cohesive look.Helpful Reply

Z on Aug 17, 2015If money were no object, and the fact that you have a large family, I would buy modular pieces instead of any standard sofa or sectional. Buy at least three corner, two armless pieces and one ottoman. If you like this idea, you can use the drawings I did for you to try many possibilities.Helpful Reply

Susan on Aug 18, 2015Too much furniture. I would use only the cream sofas, move the other out to another area, maybe for a bedroom sitting area? If you need more seating than that find a coffee table that will fit two upholstered ottomans under to be used for extra seating. Pull some dining chairs in also when entertaining large numbers. You don't need that much sitting in one room. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Susan on Aug 18, 2015Sorry just saw your family size. Still your entire family is not going to be in the same room on a regular basis at the same time. Find a large sectional with a large ottoman and find some other benches etc that can be easily moved into the room as needed. Kids can sit on the floor with cozy floor cushions too. That's my answer.Helpful Reply

Elizabeth on Aug 21, 2015I would sell the sofas and love seat then buy a L shaped sectional (maybe one with a chase on one end) then put two matching chairs with a small table in between. Your rug should be large enough to go under the sofa and chairs.Helpful Reply
