Leak in bathroom shower?

Hello everyone,

Recently we purchased a new home. Everything was perfect until last week. But yesterday we discovered a leak from our second-floor bathroom shower. It drips down the ceiling below and water is being flowed to our floor. We need to clean the floor and the ceiling area each time after using the shower. We're considering calling a plumber. Maybe you have experienced a similar problem at our house. How did you manage the situation?

Hi Mike, stop using the upstairs shower and call a plumber to locate the problem before you have more damage.

You may want to call a plumber. If your handy with plumbing and drywall repairs you can do it. It could be shower head pipe, shower valve, or shower drain. I would first try the shower head pipe. Remove the shower head. Then remove the shower head pipe from the wall. Use a cloth on the pipe and a wrench so not to damage the pipe. Get some plumbers teflon tape and wrap the threads on the pipe that goes into the wall a few turns. Screw the pipe back on. Put the shower head back on and turn the shower on and see if that solved the leak. Could be that simple. Checking the shower valve you would need to remove the handle, then the cover plate. Replace the handle and turn on the shower. Use a flash light to see if you notice and leaks. If there are any leaks call a plumber. The repair would mean opening the wall or if possible getting in thru the backside wall. To check the drain an inspection hole would need to be cut in the ceiling below the drain, turning on the shower, and using a flashlight to see it the drain is leaking

Hi there! It was an easy fix for us actually it was just that the drain was so slow. We cleaned out the trap and BOOM no more problems. I would try that first before calling a plumber.

I would call a plumber so he can find where the leak is - the longer you let it go the more damage it will cause to the ceiling and floors and also mold and mildew can start to build up behind the walls- plumbers know best how to fix these things before they get bad

  • Absolutely call a plumber. If you have another shower, use that one since the more you use this one, the more water damage you will have in the walls. Mold will also be an issue.

Stop using the second floor bathroom until the problem is fixed. Call a plumber as odds are there is some damage you can't see. You don't want to let this problem go and end up battling mold.

Check your homeowner's insurance policy to see what your coverage and deductible are. Document everything you have done to solve the problem and any receipts for expenses you have incurred. Notify your insurance company now to get the claim process moving should you decide to file a claim.

Hi! Water damage isn't always immediately visible. By the time we realized we had a leak at our old home, it had started creating all kinds of havoc. Call a professional ASAP. You don't want a ceiling to fall down or rotten supports below the shower. Meanwhile, shut off the water to that shower and stop using it before it causes some really expensive damage. Good luck!

I second the idea of checking the trap, just in case. It may be just that easy of a fix. Otherwise, yes a plumber should take a look.

    I would contact a plumber

  • First, stop using that shower. How new is the home? Did you buy it from a builder? If so, contact them and have them repair it otherwise yes, absolutely call a plumber stat. Water causes a ridiculous amount of damage and the longer you let it go, the more costly the repair will be.

I had this problem and not to scare you, I ripped out my whole shower, redid the entire thing. You can read about it here: https://www.flippingtheflip.com/2019/08/the-master-shower-one-of-series.html
