What are your thoughts about Painting Wood?

Why is everyone soo gung-ho about painting over beautiful wood? Why not just use clear varnish or a varnish that will bring out the color of the wood?

some of us have wood pieces from multiple tree types- i have walnut and oak pieces in my living room. it does't bother me that the wood species are different colors, but some like to have all wooden pieces match. painting is usually easier to clean up from, doesn't require solvents or smelly fumes.

Painting is a great way to update older wooden furniture. I don't think many of us would intentionally paint a valuable antique, but painting is one way to keep a special piece, but update it to make it work in your space.

i have also used stains to enhance the color of the wood. It's kind of a meet in the middle between painting and just varnish.

I get tired of conventional items. My husband made me have white walls and beige carpet. It looked boring and just like everyone else's house. When we divorced I put in teal carpet, painted my old kitchen cabinets from brown to hunter green and white. It made such a difference in the room. Really brightened it up. I just don't like dull things. It is too depressing. I love to paint and brighten up old furniture that really isn't valuable as antiques.
