Many people on Pinterest and also Hometalk have used crates. Others have used old dressers and made some beautiful things. Have seen college kids take cement blocks, paint the blocks and put like 2x4's or whatever shelf size and make storage.
I agree with the old dresser idea. Sand it down and give it a fresh coat of paint. Then you could store your stuff in a drawer so it can't be seen. Much more organzied too.
It looks to me like those are c.d.s or dvds? You have to structure something to hold what it is you need held. Our c.d. player is in this small wall hung cabinet which came from a yard sale for next nothing, but it fits the space. Under the player are our c.d.s. My husband made a holder out of thin plywood that divides the space (same as for player) into four sections. This holds our c.d.s and makes a neat looking display. Sorry I don't have a better picture. Your space could use a much larger storage piece. It could be as high as your chair back, but I would use something shallow, like a bookcase or a shallow cabinet with doors. But if you are handy you could also divide this unit into sections that would hold a lot more and much more neatly. Think of vertical space as well as horizontal.
Buy or make a Cabinet that has doors at the bottom an maybe would enclose your TV too.
Clutter is only clutter if you can see it! LOL
The second hand stores (flea market types) have all sorts of small chests that you can pick up rather cheaply.
Keep in mind that with a light sanding, almost anything can be painted...and with those new Chalk Paint and wax, old things are becoming stunning.
I like using the Dark Old English oil on older pieces. It hides scratches and brings back life as well as cleans off the gunk! Books and tapes can be place on their sides with the binders showing so you can read them. I kept my old dresser upstairs full of books! LOL
Have you thought about a chest that could be storage and extra seating? You could put the small wooden crates that you can buy at a craft store inside the chest to make it easy to lift out different batches of dvds.
I love the old dresser idea. Or why not buy small bins that fit on your shelves to organize those DVD’s and things? Target, Home Goods, TJ Max, and other stores often carry them in different styles and colors to suit your decor.
just put everything in decorative boxes and keep the shelf. This would be the least expensive way. If you do get something new, just make sure it has drawers or doors to hide your stuff
I would have to agree. A chest painted in a color to compliment the room. Then you can take out the drawers and replace them with decorative baskets .
Take a trip to a thrift shop that sells furniture. You my get a little chest with drawers.
I would start by organizing what you have ..... https://www.amazon.com/Snap-N-Store-Storage-Boxes-Black-SNS01617/dp/B00063E2FU/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1511324598&sr=8-32&keywords=cd+organizer+box
Control the wires behind it with cord covers... https://www.amazon.com/2017-Design-Cable-Management-Sleeve/dp/B01NCK0XLY/ref=sr_1_21?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1511325153&sr=1-21&keywords=cord+covers
paint that white cord cover from TV gray to match wall
Depending if your on a tight budget? Try thrift store, offer up or Craigslist for a taller console chest or dresser so you can store all those item out of sight, something with drawers and cabinet style.
Just get some cute baskets to put the clutter in. Maybe repaint the shelves a different color.
