Shoes require no special storage conditions. Keep them dry and circulate a little air around so they dry out between uses. Poorly made shoes won't be helped by storage conditions and that sounds like what you have.
I have resorted to storing shoes in climate controlled areas in plastic totes or the plaid plastic storage bags in the back in corners of any available closet.
I have personally found that seasonal weather temperature changes in the garage have caused dry rot in my boots and snow sneakers.
Maybe because I won't spend tons of money on shoes. But I've kept thwm in a cool closet on a wire reck. where air can circulate at all times. And I've also stored some of my shoes in a tote and they didn't fall apart. Thanks
