I use large empty tin cans and clean the labels off. I paint them with outdoor patio paints from Craft Store...then I decorate with puffy paints along the top and bottom or whatever designs/colors you want. I punch three holes in bottom with a large nail, put an inch of rocks or mulch in the bottom and plant different colorful annuals in each can. I attach cans to a picket fence or a board of barn wood and set outside during the summer. I also did one with houseplants and keep in my cottage during winter and on the screened in porch in the summertime...very festive and colorful...great winter project. I also paint 4X4 wooden beams - different on each side and attach various large bowls from thrift stores (with putty so you can remove and clean the bowl) and make beautiful, unique bird baths. Also refurbish old birdhouses and embellish roofs with stones, pennies, etc. and paint each one in a different motif - use dresser knobs for perches...
I like making fridge magnets. I take old cardboard, splatter some paint on it, cut it up into little fun shapes, laminate and attach them to strips of magnet from the art store. They make my fridge happy
My granddaughter and I are building a fairy village in a flower bed. We've painted rocks, decorated birdhouses, created paths with glass "gems", and we are constantly on the outlook for new treasures. She comes up with something new every week!
Something fun to do is gather some pine straw, white glue, and an old muffin pan and plastic wrap. Line the pan with the plastic wrap. This will keep the pine straw from sticking to the pan. Gather a handful of pine straw and curl it around into a nest shape. Push it into the muffin pan. Then drizzle white glue over the straw. Let it dry for a few days. Remove the nest from the pan and pull off the plastic wrap. You can use scissors to trim off any large globs of glue. These make very cute place cards for a party, or ornaments for the christmas tree. Glue a clip type clothespin on the bottom of the nest and the nest can be clipped to the christmas tree. Add a few tiny eggs int he nest and maybe a little bird.
