Where do I start?

My house is falling apart. I do not know where to start nor do I have a lot of money. My husband is not good at DIY stuff. I will make every effort but am lost myself. I don't even know where to begin.

What bothers you the most? Maybe start with that! Or go around your home and write things down that are in most disrepair. Getting it on a list may help you to organize projects you can start doing without too much expense. Any safety issues should be taken care of quickly for your family's welfare. Don't be discouraged, maybe once you start on small changes your husband will get involved and interested too. Make it fun! It can be!

Paint its cheap and anyone can paint. A small project, like a powder room. Replace the door knobs, paint the door, regrout the sink, new faucets, new mirror ( Goodwill or a second hand shop or a Habitat for Humanity place will have great deals). One small step at a time, it took us two years to finish a bedroom and add a bath to my basement. Just one step at a time.

Plus I like Janice's idea. Now, short term, next year, long term, dream (we all have to dream) lists.

Thanks. Any ideas for ceilings? Mine is starting to cave in. :(

Sandra, if the ceilings are falling in, there's got to be a reason. If you have roof leaks those will have to be fixed before you do the ceilings. If the house is settling, you will need to fix that before you fix the ceilings. For a room whose ceilings is falling without warning, you may want to shore up the ceiling with 2x4's for safety. Good luck.

It can be overwhelming so I completely understand! I've had to break things down and prioritize. Are there areas that may pose safety hazards? Are there items on the list that could lead to serious problems (ie, much more $$) if left unattended? This has helped me.

It still can be daunting, but, once you accomplish some tasks, be proud of yourself! These 'small' accomplishments help show that you CAN do it! It's a learning experience but please know you're not alone!!
