Which clear coat to use over metallic paint?
Building an exterior tool box for truck. I want to paint a logo including metallic paints detail. I am using a marine varnish to protect the box. But when I brushed the varnish over the metallic paint the paint smeared off. What paint should I use to prevent this from happening again?

I would try a product called Everbrite Clear Protective Coating. It's a spray so it shouldn't smear anything.
A spray on protectant would eliminate the smearing, here's a bunch of them from Amazon:

Use a clear spray paint in several light coats light coats. Rustoleum or Krylon.
I'd recommend a weather resistant clear coat like this one: https://amzn.to/3FJ27Ak. You may need to shop at a local Lowe's or Home Depot so you don't need to pay that ridiculouls high price on Amazon for 6 cans.
What about trying a clear matt lacquer spray. Then put the marine varnish on top.
Varnish
Hi Michael, your best bet would be to use a clear spray-on protective coating. Rust-Oleum and Krylon are both good choices in gloss and satin.
Is polyurethane good for metal?
Comprised of STEEL-IT Polyurethane #1002 applied over STEEL-IT Weathering Primer #2203, the system adheres to surfaces aggressively, and is ideal for protecting structural steel and other metals. These single component coatings require no complicated mixing.
Go to Michaels And get spray lacquer to put over the desighn that won’t mess it up
Make sure you do a test first as I find sealers and spray sealers negate the metallic aspect.
