The front pops off leaving the rest on the wall.
The thermostat snaps off the backplate revealing the batteries.
On the ones I've installed, there is a tiny little screw on one side or end. You need to loosen or completely remove before "snapping" the front cover off. Google on utube, you'd be amazed what you can find. Or better still, look up the manufacturer's manual for your unit, and read the step by step.
