How can I troubleshoot my home A/C?

Everything comes on and starts to work properly. The there is a rumbling in the attic air handler, the sound of a power surge like the motor struggling, and the circuit breaker trips. I can reset the breaker and the unit comes on and may run for a few minutes then the above scenario repeats.

If it was me I would call a HVAC co asap. Sounds like it could be dangerous since it's tripping a breaker.
I would contact the manufacturer and explain this to them. They should be able to give you a fairly good idea.
Call an HVAC tech. If the blower motor is belt driven it may be binding, motor going out on overload tripping the breaker. Direct drive motor the bearings may be going bad also binding on overload. Squirrel cage (fan blade) may be loose and binding the motor. Too many variables. If you go in the attic and take a look while the unit is running, you may find the problem and be able to fix it. Be aware if you open any of the panels there may be safety switches that will disengage. A piece of tape can hold them on.
Yeah, call a professional. If you are asking this question, you shouldn't be messing with it yourself.
I, also think that an hvac person needs to check that out.
