I hope someone out there can help me. I had a wood burning fireplace..

I had it changed over to a gas, when they put in the fire box they told me that I would not be able to close the damper I thought at the time it was no big deal. But I have found that when the fireplace is off it’s like setting with a window open. I was wondering if it would be safe to block the opening when the fireplace is off? The pilot light is always on. Please help Thank you

I would call the company that installed it for a solution, cause gas fumes are nothing to mess with.

Do not block the opening with the pilot light on. Someone can accidentally turn the fireplace on not knowing the damper is closed. The pilot light in a gas fireplace tends to be larger than other gas appliances and releases more carbon dioxide. Some states actually require the damper to be removed to prevent situations as that to occur.

When the gas furnace is off cold comes in through the chimney and with the gas exhaust going up when in use you have a lot of heat loss also. Check with installers and/or places in your area who install both wood/pellet and gas to see what they suggest - - - - more than ONE! Ask Google How to seal off a chimney with a gas stove vent going up it.

Call the Company that fitted the Gas Fire - Sounds like you have a problem..........

They should have installed a shutoff valve on the end of the gas pipe in the fireplace. If not you need one so you can turn the pilot off and shut the damper.

You can not do it yourself. If you do, then your insurance will not cover any damage that may occur.
