I would not think the thermostat would be able to represent the house temperature well in a cupboard. It needs to be where the room temp represents all the house as much as possible. A cupboard would either be too warm or too cold.
NO! The thermostat needs to unobstructed. It needs to sense the room air to operate properly. The thermostat can be moved to another location. Just running the wiring within the walls can be a slight problem.
No, you won't get a good reading. Get a hvac repairman to move the thermostat for you, making sure its new spot isn't in a draft, over a lamp (where heat from the bulb will prevent a good reading), etc.
Absolutely not! It is best located in a hallway or another inside area of your home and not too close to your heat vents to keep your home comfortable. A good hvac person can recommend an ideal spot to have it relocated.
