Any thoughts on what would be better for vents

  • Need to get more airflow in attic crawlspace to help stop fungus from growing. Someone suggested thermostatic fans at gables or whole house fan. Any thoughts on which would be better? Have enough vents in roof.

Is there insulation in the attic floor? Fungus and mold only grow with the presence of moisture. Attic fan will increase air movement but may not solve the fungus/mold problem. Need to find what is causing it.

My preference would be a natural flow, rather than a fan. Fine Homebuilding magazine and website have expert ideas about the ventilation required to maintain a healthy attic. See if they can help you!

Our first house in Cape Coral, Florida had a whole house fan and it was wonderful. In cooler weather you could open up the house can it would circulate cool air throughout the home. The second house I went to a Home Improvement Show and show solar fans that are mounted into your roof. These worked great to take the hot air out of the attic. Rick Allen

We have had huge fans in the ceiling that vented to the attic. They can sure kick up a breeze. But your heat and air will be sucked into the attic and out the roof vents. It’s not worth the breeze. We also put a box fan in the garage ceiling to blow some of the hot air in the attic into the garage. Our garage got so hot that some of the plastic Christmas decorations melted, and the electric bill went sky high. That experiment ended during the second summer. We live in Texas, so we dont cover the roof turbines in winter. We have days in the 80s every month of the year, some years. We also have lots of insulation in the walls and ceiling, and well-sealed air ducts. Good luck on finding your answer. ☺️

Whole house fan, just one worked for our huge house (placement is key). On hot days we could suck cool evening air in for a few minutes and all of the hot air accumulated in house and attic went right out attic vents. Attic temps dropped by at least 20 degrees after ten minutes of fan.
