the Mitsubishi ductless might be a good answer. At first blush they might seem expensive, however if your older home doesn’t have duct work in place it may be just as expensive to install ducts for a conventional system.

I like the Ductless units --- Honeywell makes them, as does Mitsubishi -- they are sort of like the units in Motel rooms ....

I have a Mitsubishi ductless unit installed in my open concept dining room, kitchen and living room area. It heats in the winter and is an air conditioner in the summer. I LOVE IT! It is well worth spending the money and having it installed. It works very well in both winter and summer. They say that in the winter the unit won't work if the temperature is in the below zero range BUT ours works even in the 30 BELOW and colder range. Be aware that if you are on OFF PEAK for any electric heating this unit cannot be put on OFF PEAK=at least not in my neck of the woods. However--I think it's been very reasonable. In the hot summer the air conditioning only raise out electric bill about 20.00 per month and just a bit more in the winter. Well worth it.
