Unless your furnace is large enough to carry the extra load of the square footage in your garage, you'll need another heat source. You can find information to help you with the answer here. http://www.acdirect.com/mobile-learning-center-furnace-sizing-calculator

You're very welcome @Maureen. My Daddy was a furnace man when I was a little girl, so I have a bit of a background in the very basics of heating a home.

Do you have any other means of heat maybe a electric fireplace ?

No, Janet! Good idea, though. Still in the planning stage..an uninsulated garage at present.

We have the 2nd one in this link: the DV 35 SG in our insulated garage and we really like it. It can be used in bedrooms as well. It even comes in pink! But you have to make sure you put nothing above it. http://www.empirezoneheat.com/ehs/index.php?view=direct-vent-wall-furnace

@B. Enne, thanks. I'm sure hubby knows more about this than I do as he researched many different types of heating and cooling systems before he chose what to use in our home. We have a window unit in our garage that does both heat and cool, but it's not really large enough to heat well enough so we bought another heater. Maybe we should move that unit to my shed, installing it in the wall. The shed is 12 by 16 with eight foot ceiling and two 6 by 12 foot lofts above that, so it is good sized, but since I'll only use it for a studio, I wouldn't really feel good about over spending on an HVAC system. I'm not sure what hubby has planned for the new garage/outbuilding either.
