Types of Air Conditioning

Easy Air & Heat

As the summer temperatures continue to scorch the U.S., many homeowners are thanking the effectiveness of their air conditioning units, as well as secretly hoping that they don't temporarily break down or - even worse - go completely kaput. If you have seniors, pets or children living in your home, it's no laughing matter when your AC system breaks down. The sweltering warmth is too hot to handle for many individuals, especially throughout states such as Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, Texas or California. In fact, California is experiencing its hottest year on record this summer!
One of the most practical reasons why you should check and upgrade your AC system is so that it can work at its optimum level. For example, new AC units are now built to be extremely energy-efficient, while older models can really influence how much you spend on your utility bills. As the U.S. Department of Energy states, "Today's best air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners made in the mid 1970s. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model."

Therefore, although we typically tend to underestimate the importance of our AC units and all that they do for us on a daily basis, you must remember to replace the filter once every two months, as well as regularly make sure that it is working correctly. If your AC suddenly decides to stop working and you need to get the entire system replaced, or if you want to upgrade your old unit to something much better, there are five options that will spare you from an unbearably hot and sweaty summer.
Central Air Conditioners - Probably one of the most common AC unit types for homes and apartments, central air is suitable for residences of many different sizes. However, it is important that you choose a system that is appropriate to the dimensions of your property, since a small unit will not be able to cope with cooling a large area over and over, while a larger unit can inadvertently "flood" too much cold into a small room. Central air is popular because it works so effectively and runs very quietly; this is a blessing at night when you are trying to get to sleep after a hard day at work.
Ductless Air Conditioners - Also referred to as "split systems" or PTACs (Packaged Thermal Air Conditioners), a ductless system is a popular AC choice due to its high-efficiency cooling; since ductless systems obviously do not possess any ducts, they will not lose energy. Another advantage is that, because they are small, they can be installed much easier than larger and more complicated systems available on the market. They are usually placed in multiple zones around a home, as well as being used to cool large-scale offices and other commercial buildings.
Window Air Conditioners - A self-contained AC unit featuring all the necessary refrigeration components inside, this small box-like object is characteristically located in the vertical window sash. It sits on top of the window frame and is usually found in hotel and motel rooms, smaller homes, and apartments.
Wall Air Conditioners - Similar to window air conditioners, these AC systems offer the same functions, but are simply located in a wall instead of by the window. Because you need a "sleeve" to manage the weight of the unit, some people end up choosing window air conditioners instead of having their AC suspended up on the wall. However, if your room doesn't even have a window, then the wall AC option is your best bet! Wall air conditioners cool single rooms quickly but struggle with larger spaces.
Portable Air Conditioners - You'll certainly be aware of these types of AC unit, mostly because they're not only used in houses and apartments but almost everywhere else too, be it in outside bar areas, or hot office spaces. Characteristically featuring small wheels that enable them to be moved from room to room, portable units are cheap compared to other AC systems - by and large because of their size and the fact that they do not need to be professionally installed. However, a substantial drawback to portable options is that they produce a very loud and distracting hum, which makes them a bad choice in public libraries and hospital waiting rooms.

The portable air conditioners is something new that I've just seen and heard about. In home, there's a central air unit that has already been installed by the previous homeowner. Since the house is about 7 years old it seems like the unit itself might need an air conditioning repair done. Mostly because of how it's making such heavy noises and always slowing down.
