I haven't seen a difference in them and i've got 3 freezers running.

I have a newer frost free upright and I love it! The food stays great as long as you don't get out the ice cream during defrost, it melts easily if you do. Mine has a fast freeze for when I put in fresh garden fruits & veggies and we put this on just before we get out the ice cream!

They both have their advantages. Manual defrost are usually cheaper (look at the price sticker). They are also cheaper to operate (https://www.aphome.com/appliance-blog/the-cold-hard-truth-about-freezers-frost-free-vs-manual-defrost-and-chest-freezer-vs-upright-freezer/). A chest freezer is even cheaper to purchase and operate. Manual defrost chest freezers keep the food at an even temp. Frost free freezers have temps that vary to defrost the freezer for you. They are also nice since you don't have to defrost them. But you pay for that convenience both in the up front cost and the operating cost. A temp that varies can shorten the life of food too.

We went with manual defrost chest freezer but that was after doing research on the brand and make. Whatever you decide on check in out first. See what people who have purchased the model you are interested in think.

Thanks so much. I definitely need an upright but will check out the manual defrost. Sounds like the food stays better with the one that comes with the most work 😢
