What can I do about hard water scale in my portable washing machine?

Hard water scale is wreaking havoc with my portable washer. The hoses I can only assume are scale lined and I know my metal filters are. I imagine that there are other parts that are scaled too if they have contact with my hard water. I just can't see them. Replacement parts cost a fortune. There is no possibility of hooking up a water softening system as that too is cost prohibitive. While I hate using chemicals at this point I will use anything to save my washing machine and have it working efficiently again.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Delicia Ambrosino

Try running white vinegar through a wash cycle and see if that breaks down the scale.

I agree, white vinegar wash cycle. Afterwards, clean with bleach and then another vinegar cycle. Worked for me after we moved, good luck!!

1 to 2 cups depending on how big the washer is. If you are washing whites throw in a cup of baking soda also.

It is a portable washer. I'm wracking my brains because I know the hose must have some scale on it too. The dilemma that the hose poses is how to keep the vinegar in without it leaking all over. Besides putting the hose in a bathtub and using gallons and gallons of vinegar I can think of no other way as I think if the hose is as straight as possible the better the vinegar would get all of inside of the hose. Still, buying multiple gallons of vinegar would be far cheaper than a new hose. TY Pung61
