Don't let the water sit after shutting off the iron. Before you iron your next item run it with steam over a rag until the rust is gone. It does go away.
Clean the inside tank with vinegar. Fill the tank, leave the iron on hot and let it steam away. If it has an automatic turn off like mine, move and shake the iron every once in a while.

Fill it with straight vinegar, about one cup. Put the steam button on, then lay it down on a cookie rack, and let it steam out. When that's done, use Q-tips to clean the holes. Before you use it, check it on some rag laying around. Fill it again, put it on steam, and see if you get any brown gunk. Good Luck!
P.S. Empty iron after each use.
P.S put the cookie rack in the sink
I used the instructions in the link, the baking soda /water paste worked great! https://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/cleaning/laundry/clean-iron
