How do you fix a Freon leak on a Tempstar SmartComfort 2000 AC Unit?

I have a Tempstar SmartComfort 2000 AC Unit and a Tempstar DC90 Ultra High Efficiency Furnace. It is around 18 years old and the air condition recently stopped working.
In checking it out I found it had a Freon leak in one of the small lines leading to the A coil.
I contacted a local Heating and Air Conditioning dealer and they said all that could be done is to replace the whole unit.
Surely they jest! I understand that this unit is 18 years old however; it is just a leak!
Is there a way to repair a leak in an older system and replace the Freon?

You will definitely need a HVAC guy. Call around and see if any will do it. They will have to evacuate the system, fix the leak, then recharge the system. Problem is there isn't much money to be made. That's why whoever you called want to replace the whole system. You can also check with Home Depot. They have a list of contractors that purchase from them the can refer. Good luck.

You need to get it serviced as it is illegal to release freon into the air. Freon is a regulated gas.
