How to best insulate gable attic fan?

We have a large fan & open gable vents above it. I would like to make something that comes off easily in spring but keeps cold out in the winter. We live in north east & it is already getting cold. I currently have some paper backed fiberglass, some tyvek paper & probably some plastic vapor barrier handy.

  • Is this in an attic or open to the space below - if attic you are probably going to run into issues with ice dams though if just the fan I would make a cover with foam board. Now if open to below & the roof is insulated- consider foam board covers also

It is an attic above a ranch, however it has a door to a living room /2 bedroom addition. We are experiencing ice damming. There is a @ 2 foot overhang with soffit. No ridge cap. The floor is insulated, the eaves are not. No real floor to speak of in majority of attic. Our daughters living room is above garage & is always cold. As a preventative measure we have put heating cables, roof kit along gutters for this coming winter.
